Laundry Room Design - part 3
In this part of the article I cover additional aspects that must be considered when remodeling a laundry room. In addition, I will mention some of the available options available as add-ons for a perfect laundry room
Storage
The laundry room is commonly used for storage, mainly of dirty clothes but for other items such as cleaning materials as well. Preparing adequate storage space will help you keep the room clean and tidy.
Counter space is a great advantage so try to provide as much of it as possible. Sorting bins are extremely helpful, including storage for a hamper for dirty clothes. In addition, space for a wastebasket is a plus.
Place wire bins or plastic laundry baskets under a counter top on sliding rails, to hold clean clothes for each member of your household. The baskets make it easy to return clean items to the proper room.
Installing shelves over the washer for soaps, detergents, bleach, fabric softener, and other chemicals is recommended and will make cleaning materials accessible. As you design your laundry room, be sure to place shelves out of the reach of children and leave adequate clearance for a top-loading washer.
Optional Add-ons
Insulation
Installing adequate insulation in the walls, ceiling, and floor of the laundry room will help reduce noise and vibrations in the adjoining rooms allowing you to use the washer and drier in the room whenever you want including during night time.
Sink
Installing a sink in the laundry room for hand washables and other clean up jobs will prove itself very handy. The best laundry room sink models are those that have a whirlpool, a washboard front, and a recessed soap dish.
Ironing Board
If you plan your laundry room well and have enough room, it can be used as the house laundry center. Install a built-in ironing board or place your stand-alone ironing board in the laundry room. Be sure to leave adequate space to walk around the ironing board when it's open and plan a storage space for it.
Lighting
Proper illumination is important. Install light fixtures over the sink and over any work area. Overhead fluorescent fixtures are recommended as they are effective and energy efficient.
