Kitchen Remodeling:
Kitchen Islands

By Allen Shapiro

Latest trends in kitchen remodeling imply that as families are getting smaller, kitchens are getting bigger. When asked about their dream kitchen, many home owners are interested in state-of-the-art cabinets and a kitchen island. This trend is also emphasized in all decorating magazines and Showrooms as kitchen islands are longer and wider than ever before.

Other than providing a kitchen with a modern look and design, kitchen islands provide extra work space to your kitchen. Whether you choose a small table or a custom-build, state of the art islands, the new addition to your kitchen will allow you to make the best out of the kitchen space.

Simple Kitchen Islands

Simple islands are usually flat surface islands. These are simple solutions that contribute elegance to a kitchen. To add more style and uniqueness, you may want to consider architectural details such as corner posts, inset areas, and open shelving.

Simple kitchen islands are relatively inexpensive and can be as simple as a table with open legs. When designed carefully, these kitchen islands become a central point in the kitchen.

High End Kitchen Islands

While some home owners choose simple, single surface islands, some go for custom made kitchen islands built of fine cabinetry and include a sink, granite counters, a cook-top, storage cabinets, a dishwasher, an oven, and wine refrigerator. The only limit is space.

High end kitchen islands will include multi level surfaces and can incorporate both food preparation and eating areas. In addition, high end islands will include mini-bars, shelves, bar sinks, deep fryers, and other amenities.

Planning

Adding a kitchen island requires careful planning. First confirm that you have enough room to add the island. Consult your home improvement contractor and ask for recommendations. Home improvement contractors have the knowledge and experience to advise you and help planning.

As you plan your kitchen island, think about how you want to use it. Think of your needs and consider the following factors:

  • Are you looking to add working area? Storage area?
  • Will you need drawers or shelves?
  • Will you need an extra sink?
  • Do you want your island to accommodate appliances?

These factors will affect the type of island you need as well as the building process (electricity, plumbing) and the costs.

Multiple Islands

If you have a large kitchen with more than one working area, your kitchen may accommodate multiple islands. A food preparation island near the sink or stove serves as a work space. A serving or eating island can be convenient and useful.
