Kitchen Remodeling:
Designing Your New Kitchen
Any home remodeling project, whether it be a simple fixture replacement or a major addition, must start with pre-planning of both the financial investment and the project itself. A good plan will help identifying problems before they occur and will prevent situation in which one stage of the home remodeling leads to many more, unplanned, repairs.
Consider That
There are too many variables involved in a home remodeling project. You will have to consider structural aspects such as load-bearing walls, plumbing and wiring locations, possible changes to the roof line, etc.
In addition, you will have to make choices as for the kinds of materials you want to use, custom vs. pre-manufactured cabinets, carpet vs. hardwood or vinyl floors and so on. Take in consideration that these choices will have a lot to do with your final costs and be sure to discuss your options and costs with your contractor.
Do I Need a Contractor?
Many homeowners are dealing with this question every day. Keep in mind that even while some jobs seem simple to handle, in most cases, they require some background knowledge and professionalism.
Sometimes, even simple tasks such as interior painting are tasks where beginners may find themselves over their heads.
Building Permits
If your home remodeling project involves structural changes, electrical circuits' reinstallations or replacing plumbing pipes, you probably need to get proper permits.
Building permits are usually issued by the city department which oversees private construction projects. These permits are meant to assure that the home remodeling plans meet specific building codes and that only qualified professional will perform these tasks.
If you choose to hire a contractor or an architect, ask if the service includes acquiring the permits from the city.
The Bottom Line
Before you start knocking down walls, carefully consider the feasibility, practicality and cost of a home remodeling venture. If the home remodeling project calls for professional help, a good contractor can be a life saver.
