Home Remodeling and Construction 101:
Glossary of Terms - F
Face Frame
A face frame is a frame placed over the cabinet box against which the doors and drawers will rest. Face frames are made from vertical stiles and horizontal rails.
Fascia
Fascia is a vertical wood member, such as a cedar 1" x 6", which is nailed to the ends of the rafters and is often the backing of the gutter.
Feathering Strips
Feathering strips are tapered wood filler strips placed along the butt edges of old wood shingles to create a level surface when re-roofing over existing wood shingle roofs. Feathering strips are also known as horse feathers.
Fibered Aluminum Roof Coating
This is a high-performance metallic reflective barrier for prepared roofing, metal surfaces and exterior masonry. Reflects sun's harmful rays, reduces energy costs in summer and winter while prolonging surface life.
Fiber Coating
This term is a general term and includes:
- Fibered Foundation Coating
Combined application for this special medium-viscosity-grade fibered material. Use as a foundation coating.
- Fibered Roof Coating
This is the optimal protection for low-sloped roofs. This thick, high- quality coating seals fine cracks and openings. Renews old composition roofing and prolongs roof life.
Final Inspection
A final inspection is the phase where a building is reviewed by an inspector. Final inspection is performed after the interior and exterior construction is complete, to check for any problems that may endanger the health or safety of the building occupants. Usually, a certificate, indicating that the final inspection has been successfully completed, is required before the structure can be occupied.
Finish Coat
A finish coat is the final coat of any material on a surface. The third coat of common stucco is the finish coat and contains textures and pigments. If the finish does not contain pigment, the surface of the stucco must be painted when dry.
Floor Plan
A floor plan is a sketch of an existing or proposed building showing the design and layout of the building and the specifications of each room. Very often, a floor plan will show placements of doors, windows, stairways and other features and fixtures.
Framing
A structure framing is the structural wood and/or metal elements of most constructed homes. The floor and ceiling framing is called the joist work. Wall framing is usually made out of 2" x 4" or 2" x 6" studs.
