Glossary of Terms - C
Cabinet Soffit
A cabinet soffit is the boxed framework found above the upper cabinets in kitchens.
Casement Window
A casement window has two vertical sections that crank open outward. This type comes with hinges on one of the vertical sides and swings open like a normal door.
Caulking
This term is often used to describe the flexible material used to seal a gap between two surfaces such as pieces of siding or the corners in tub walls. This term is also referred to as the mastic or asphalt plastic cement used to fill a joint to prevent leaks.
Change Order
A change order is a legal written document which modifies the details of a construction contract.
Circuit Breaker
A circuit breaker is a switch-like device that automatically stops the flow of electricity when it senses too much current or an abnormal condition. It is usually located inside the electrical panel or circuit breaker box. Once a circuit breaker opens, it must be reset before the flow of power can be restored.
Class "A" Fire Resistance
This term described the highest fire-resistance rating for roofing per ASTM E-108. class "A" fire resistant roof is able to withstand severe exposure to fire originating from sources outside the building.
Class "B" Fire Resistance
This fire-resistance rating indicates roofing material that is able to withstand moderate exposure to fire originating from sources outside the building.
Class "C" Fire Resistance
Fire-resistance rating that indicates roofing material is able to withstand light exposure to fire originating from sources outside the building.
Coating
Coating is a layer of viscous asphalt applied to the base material into which granules or other surfacing is embedded.
Concealed Nail Method
A concealed nail method is the application of roll roofing in which all nails are driven into the underlying course of roofing and covered by a cemented, overlapping course. This technique is user to prevent nails from being exposed to weather conditions.
Condensation
Condensation is the process in which water vapor changes into liquid water. this happened usually when warm moisture-laden air comes in contact with a cold surface.
