Driveway Ideas - part 2

By Ben Shabat

In the first part of this article, I covered the available driveway options using materials such as concrete and pressed soil (earth). This article covers more option available to give your driveway an inviting special look.

Brick Driveways

Constructing brick driveways is one of the simplest materials to work with. Bricks are manufactured in standard sizes but offer a variety of colors and shapes. For more attractive driveways, you can compose repetitive geometric patterns along the the driveway.

The main advantage of using bricks for a driveway is the fact that if one cracks or breaks you can replace that specific damaged brick only. Installing the bricks in concrete or a sand bed will provide a more stable and permanent driveway.

Stone Driveways

Stone offers versatile options for a driveway as you can find stones in many colors and styles. When it comes to choosing your preferred type of stone, be sure to visit a show room or a landscape yard to see the available colors and sizes of stone.

Angular driveway stones are more stable than round stones that tend to roll away from high spots. Smaller stones may work their way through larger ones and into the bedding soil below.

Stone provides great drainage and a beautiful look for a home. However, stone driveways are extremely hard to clean so don't choose light colored stones. Although stone driveways are very easy to maintain, keep in mind that stone driveways will require annual attention to maintain the surface.

Pavers Driveways

Pavers driveways are very durable as they are manufactured to withstand weight and weather. They are laid in bedding sand and interlock to provide a perfect, stable fit. Pavers come in a wide variety of colors, shapes, textures, and designs to allow maximum creativity.

Pavers are easy to maintain and provide excellent drainage for your drivewayas they are installed onto a bedding layer.
