Building a Home Office

By Ben

Year 2000 is already behind us and the new millennium is here, the technology era. As technology advances, it allows more options than ever before. One of the hottest trends caused by technology is the fact that more and more people are considering a room addition to their home to accommodate a home office.

In today's internet era, you don't have to be physically in your office to be at work as you can access your company's network from almost any offsite location using a laptop and an internet connection. Even phones are now based on internet protocols allowing you to receive any "work call" anywhere.

Option 1 - Remodeling an Existing Room

Some "home workers" find it enough to simply remodel an existing room in the house and turn it into a home office. The advantages are that remodeling costs stays at minimum and the process is often quick.

Option 2 - Getting a Room Addition

While remodeling an existing room works for some people, for the majority of those who choose to work from home, getting a room addition is a preferred option. The main reason is that remodeling an existing room does not allow enough space.

Many of those who go for a room addition discovered that creating a home office makes a great room addition as it allows them to build a room that meets their space requirements.

Another reason to build a room addition for the home office is the fact that a room addition allows to build a separate entrance to the office which is extremely important if the office serves other employees or customers. In this case a room addition allows separating the working area from the living area.

How to Choose

So which option is right for you? Before you make up your mind, think carefully through your needs. If you are new to working from home, you may want to start with converting an existing room into an office. That will allow you to save time and money as you learn if this concept is right for you.

However, if you base your entire business on your home office, you might find it helpful to build a room addition to create the complete separation of your business you're your home.

Planning

A home office requires careful planning. You will need to think and design your office based on the business current condition and at the same time consider possible expansions in the future that will require a larger space.

Although many start the design phase in a look oriented mode, but you must keep in mind that functionality is more important. For example, beautiful, well designed filing cabinets may seem tempting; however, make sure that you design your cabinets in a way that you will actually be able to file everything you need.

Natural light is important. Learn the changes of light throughout the day. This will help you determine where to put the windows to maximize light. Natural light or the lack of natural light makes an incredible difference to how much you will want to be in your office.

Plan the space based on the furnishings it has to contain. Before you draw up the final plans take the time to figure out what office equipment and furniture you will need and where it will be placed.
