Bathroom Remodeling:
Bathtub or Shower

By Ben Shabat

According to national research studies of home remodeling projects, the bathroom is one of the most popular rooms to redecorate and remodel. Indeed, in recent years much focus has been placed on the bathroom shedding its utilitarian image and becoming a luxurious retreat.

The Big Bathroom Question

Most home owners start their home remodeling in the bathroom, trying to figure out the answer to the most common question: a bathtub or a shower. Obviously, there are many concerns that need to be considered as well as many pros and cons.

Space

Whenever remodeling a bathroom, there are all kinds of space restrictions one must be aware of. The input from your contractor in this matter is very important as well as your "master plan".

Are you planning to change any walls layout and enlarge your bathroom? And if so how will that affect the available space in your bathroom vs. other rooms?

If your space does not allow a large bathtub to fit your needs and your dreams, you will have to consider a shower and possibly a new layout.

Day-to-day Habits

Another factor you need to consider when while trying to choose between a bathtub and a shower is your day-to-day habits and how will you use the bathroom. For example: how many people are using the bathroom simultaneously? Do you bath you infants in the bathroom? Etc.

Product Selection

Bathtubs and showers now come in all shapes, sizes and colors. You can find them in composite, fiber glass, cast iron, acrylic and steel. From whirlpools and soaking baths to the timeless beauty of a claw foot tub, or creating a walk-in shower, the world's your oyster.

Trends and Special Features

While some of the latest technologies can be applied to bathtubs only, some are designed only for showers. For example some TVs are designed to be integrated into bathtubs or Jacuzzis only. On the other hand, body spas are better embedded into showers.
